Mother to Son by Langston Hughes
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor –
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now –
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
Life For me Ain’t Been No Crystal Stair! For years this has been one of my favorite pieces of work by Langston Hughes. I can definitely relate to this poem as I’m sure many of us can! I’ve been through a lot in life. Having been exposed to so much negativity in the earlier years of my life, there were no “crystal stairs” around. However, what I’ve always loved about this poem is that no matter what the situation has been, she encourages her son to not turn back because it gets hard, to keep climbing, and to keep excelling! Basically, what I see in this piece of work is to, “LET GO OF THE EXCUSES.” Don’t turn back because you run into a challenge or a hard time! Remember these two scriptural verses that help me during times of tribulation. Print them out, commit them to memory and focus on these words during the trials:
Romans 12:12, “Rejoice and exult in hope; be steadfast and patient in suffering and tribulation; be constant in prayer.”
(Key Words/Phrases- Rejoice, Hope, Steadfast, Patient, Constant in Prayer)
John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]
(Key Words/Phrases- perfect peace, confidence, be of good cheer, courage, conquered it for you.)
Remember that if you are on the path of “Pursuing Purpose with Passion” the trials will come. The enemy does not want to see you successful and walking in purpose because when you are, you are a serious threat to the kingdom of darkness! Yet no matter what you’ve been through, or no matter what you are currently going through you have the power to overcome because as John 16:33 states, Christ has overcome them for us! No matter what the situation is you can begin to create the “Crystal Stairs” in your life!
